Raw Milk: From Grass to Glass
Just like us humans, our cows love early summer. The warmer temperatures and longer days give them the opportunity to stay outside on our beautiful pastures all day and night. Our cows rotate through our fields, munching a new section of fresh grass after every milking. This keeps the cows happier, healthier, and more productive, with an endless supply of fresh grasses. This is where the milk starts, with a diverse diet of grasses, legumes, and forbs that the cows forage on. While they eat most of the day, they do enjoy taking breaks to lie down, ruminate (literally), and enjoy the beautiful weather! :)
At milking time, the cows mosey into their particular stalls inside our barn and enjoy some WMRW (our local radio station) while they wait their turn to be milked. The milk flows from the cows through a pipeline to the bulk tank, where it is filtered and immediately chilled to 37º. After milking, the cows are fed organic grain and let back outside to a fresh new pasture. Our milk is then either made into cheese, yogurt, or bottled directly into jars for your enjoyment!
All milk that you find in the grocery store is heated (pasteurized), placed under high pressure to break up the fat particles (homogenized), separated (to create cream, skim milk, and reduced fat milk), and combined with added vitamins. Our milk, on the other hand, is so much simpler. It is filtered, chilled, and bottled, that's it! It is pure and unprocessed, making it far superior to grocery store milk. It is healthier and more flavorful because the natural vitamins and minerals are not destroyed by processing.
In addition to our 3-month milk CSA, also bottle limited half gallons for non-CSA members to purchase on the weekends. Find out more about our Raw Milk CSA!
